Christian Service

Mission & Ministry at Bishop Foley Catholic seeks to build a Christian community among the students and staff of the school that is grounded in the Catholic tradition. We invite the school community to deepen their faith through regular celebrations of Mass, dynamic retreats, prayer and community-building projects.

It is from this passage of Corinthians, the teaching documents of the Catholic Church, and the example of Christ himself that BFC’s Christian Service requirement develops. As members of the body of Christ, we strive to do the work of God on Earth.

As a Christ-centered community, we seek to guide our students in reflecting the Image of God through their actions. The yearly service requirement enables students to put their faith into action as they work in service of others. Additionally, this requirement serves as a way for students to broaden their understanding of the community around them by offering their time and talents to people they do not meet on a daily basis.

Christian service hours can be submitted by completing the Google Form below.

*When submitting photos, please ensure that only BFC students and persons over the age of 18 are represented in the photos. If the photo contains persons under 18 who are not BFC students, please obscure their faces.*

** Students who transfer into BFC must speak with the Campus Minister regarding their required number of hours.

When considering what actions may serve to fulfill the Christian Service requirement, ask yourself these questions as a guide:

Answering yes to these questions makes an excellent service opportunity:

  • Does this action affirm the dignity of another person?
  • Does it empower or enable someone to claim or enhance their own dignity or somehow take more pride in themselves?
  • Did you assist a teacher or staff member in improving the community? This can include BFC, your church, your former school, your neighborhood or a similar location.
  • Did you care for God’s Creation — Earth, animals, etc?

Answering yes to these questions disqualifies something as a service opportunity:

  • Is that person a family member?
  • Were you required to be there or was it an expectation of the role (Student Council, Student Ambassadors, athletic team, Boy or Girl Scouts, etc.)?
  • Were you compensated for your time (class credit, payment, other)?

The following items will not be considered for service hours:

  • Helping family***
  • Going above and beyond for your athletic team or club (shagging balls, carrying equipment, filming, etc.)
  • Hosting Future Ventures
  • Items required by other clubs or organizations (Boy Scouts, Student Ambassadors, etc.)
  • Any time you are compensated for your time whether through monetary payment, class credit or other means
  • Hours submitted for NHS

***Recognizing that many students assist their grandparents and other elderly relatives, students are permitted to submit a total of 4 hours in this area each year. The remaining service hours must be completed elsewhere. Please note that assisting immediate family members cannot be submitted under any circumstance.

As an undeniably Catholic community, BFC has several awards for students who go above and beyond in serving others. Members of the junior class who submit over 75 hours are recognized during the Junior Honors Ceremony held in the spring. All seniors who submit more than 100 cumulative service hours during their time at BFC are recognized during the Senior Honors Banquet.
