High School Placement Test

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a measure of a student’s basic abilities and educational achievement. This test is required as part of the admission process for all 8th grade students planning to attend a Catholic high school. Bishop Foley Catholic uses applicants’ test scores to aid in proper placement within our curriculum, as well as scholarships. Further honors placement testing will be offered in the spring based on HSPT scores.

Bishop Foley Catholic offers the HSPT four times throughout the academic year. Each student may only take the exam once. Families will register to take the HSPT at the high school of their choice through the online portal below. Submitting payment online ahead of time will expedite the check-in process the day of your student’s exam.

How to Prepare
On the day of your exam, please arrive no later than 7:45 AM for registration so the test can begin promptly at 8:00 AM. Students should bring:
 
»  Two sharpened #2 pencils
»  Bottle of water to drink during the test
»  $50 cash or check made payable to Bishop Foley Catholic (required if you did not pay online)
»  Snacks or money for the vending machines
 
Calculators are not permitted for any section of the HSPT.
 
Test Scores
Bishop Foley Catholic does not use a student’s HSPT score as the sole determinant for entrance. Strong consideration is given to 7th and 8th grade performance both academically and behaviorally. Middle school teacher recommendations, as well as principal input, also aid in the overall acceptance of each student.

Testing
Accommodations

Students with an IEP or non-service plan who require testing accommodations must submit the required documentation to the high school testing site no later than the Friday before Thanksgiving. For most students, this includes:
 
»  Copy of IEP or non-service plan
»  Copy of diagnosis from a physician or therapist
 
Bishop Foley Catholic will only offer testing accommodations for the December test date. If you are requesting testing accommodations, please do so when registering for the test. Students whose documentation is not provided by the deadline may still take the exam on December 7, but will not be eligible for testing accommodations.

HSPT Prep Workshop

Bishop Foley Catholic hosts HSPT Prep Workshops each fall on our campus for 8th graders. Highly qualified Bishop Foley Catholic faculty members teach the workshops, providing advice on valuable testing tips as well as strategies to score well and avoid common mistakes. On average, students who attended our HSPT Prep Workshop in 2023 received higher scores than those who did not.
 
We will offer the HSPT Prep Workshop on Saturday, October 12 and Saturday, November 9. Both sessions contain the same information, so interested students do not need to sign up for both.
