We are filled with joy and pride to introduce our April Alumni Spotlight: Michael Cabrera, BFC Class of 1988 — Alumni Parent, Alumni Board Member, and devoted Clinical Social Worker.
All You Need is Faith
“My Catholic faith and my experience at Foley reinforced my core beliefs, especially during those vulnerable teen years,” Michael shares. Reflecting on his time at Bishop Foley,
he says, “The experience really helped form the values I live by today.”
Michael attributes much of his personal growth to the supportive environment and the influence of Foley’s theology department. Like many high schoolers, he faced his share of
challenges—but he pressed on, holding on to the belief that his faith would always guide him.
“Although I didn’t realize it at the time, the Holy Spirit was keeping me on track,” he says. “God was always guiding me and little did I know, with that trust, He led
me to my wife, Beth.”
Michael is grateful for his four years at Foley, a time when he grew into a young man ready to take on the world. Today, he works in social work, and he’s quick to credit Bishop Foley
for inspiring his career path—and for instilling the faith that still leads him every day.
Bittersweet Senior
There’s something about high school football that brings a wave of nostalgia to any Bishop Foley alum—and for Michael, that memory lives strong.
One of his fondest moments was playing football during his senior year. “I wasn’t the best player, but I wanted to be part of that brotherhood,” he recalls. “There
were intense moments in the locker room before every game, but I loved it.”
It wasn’t until their final game—the last time the Class of ’88 would wear black and gold—that the magnitude of the moment hit. “We realized this was it. Our
last time playing together as a team.” He still cherishes the heartfelt words of encouragement from the coaches—words that have stayed with him long after high school ended.
Prepared for the Future
As a high school student in the late ‘80s, Michael admits he didn’t fully realize how valuable each moment at Foley was. Looking back, he sees now how each experience helped shape
him into the husband, father, friend, and professional he is today.
“It was probably a little more difficult for me because I didn’t take things as seriously as I should have,” he reflects. “But even so, the foundation was
there—and I was able to carry what I learned into my adult life.”
Michael continues to recognize how Foley’s curriculum and faith-based approach equips students with the tools, values, and resources to succeed in all areas of life.
Knock on the Door
Now a proud father of four, Michael offers heartfelt advice to current Foley students:
“Put your trust in Him. When life gets tough, or when you need direction, pray. Share your thoughts with God. The chapel is always open—all you have to do is knock.”
He also encourages students to stay open-minded: “Whether it’s music, dance, sports, robotics, or any of the amazing clubs—give it a try. You might be surprised where it
leads you.”
He believes Foley is a place where doors open — not just academically, but personally and spiritually as well.
Michael and his wife are proud to have raised three Foley graduates. They’re especially thrilled that their eldest, Jeremy Cabrera (BFC ‘21), is about to graduate from Oakland
University!
Their family’s journey came full circle when Jeremy began kindergarten at Guardian Angels—an experience that reconnected the Cabreras with their Bishop Foley family. Through the
years, their love and commitment to our school has been a gift to our community.
Thank you, Michael, for your unwavering faith, your incredible service, and your lasting legacy at Bishop Foley Catholic
